René Maurel (1910-1986) was a ceramist who graduated from the School of Applied Arts in Paris (1923-1926) as a gilder and lacquerer. He then joined the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and then the Fontcarrade ceramics school in Montpellier in 1943. He moved to Golfe-Juan in 1945 and worked for Louis Giraud in 1945 before opening his own workshop with his wife, Yvonne Maurel.
"His pieces, thrown in red clay, are coated in brown before being glazed. In fine and precise sgraffito decorations, he develops characteristic motifs where geometric friezes alternate with figurative friezes." From 1955, they moved to Tourrette-sur-Loup to the "Poterie de la Tour" where he continued his career as a ceramist and painter.
